White-nose Syndrome has killed more than 5.7 million bats since it was discovered in a single New York cave in February 2006. The little brown bat was once the most common bat species in New York State. Since the discovery of this disease, their population has decreased by approximately 90 percent. For this special program, biologists from Ecology and Environment, Inc. will be conducting a bat survey of the preserve. Participants will safely observe bat mist netting and learn more about the importance of bats to the ecosystem and threats they face. A short guided walk of the preserve will also take place.
