Community Beer Works: Local Brew, Creating a Big Buzz

Most Buffalonians have heard it before from our friends at Buffalo First! “DRINK LOCAL.  LOCAL BREW CREATES MORE BUZZ.”  And it’s true!  Well, at the very least, “the buzz” has been verified in the economic sense of the word.  Did you know buying locally made and produced products has about a three times greater impact on the local economy?  While the multiplier effect of purchasing local products is for certain, in terms of the local brew’s buzz on the brain, you’ll have to decide for yourself if it’s any greater.

This past week, I had the pleasure of catching up with the team members of Community Beer Works (CBW) on the West side of Buffalo to discuss how their beer and their mission is creating such a buzz on the local scene.  Community Beer Works has both embraced the community at large and promoted a smart and sustainable brewing operation, which is putting Buffalo on the map of the thriving craft brew culture.

Nature Strikes a Pose

Email Print PDF

tifft_photo_contestCapture Mother Nature with your camera as she strikes an ephemeral pose.  The Friends of Tifft Nature Preserve wants your photographic entry for its 2012 Photo Contest.  Photos taken at Tifft between September 1, 2011 and October 1, 2012 by amateur photographers 16 years and older may be submitted.  The annual contest will showcase the natural beauty and historic reclamation of Tifft Nature Preserve, a 264-acre urban nature refuge operated by the Buffalo Museum of Science and dedicated to conservation and environmental education.

Tifft is rich with photographic opportunities all year long.  Wildlife abounds as nature once again claims ownership over the previously industrialized property.  Color, light, and life compose a new masterpiece at every moment.  You just have to capture it.  Gather your Tifft photos of the past 12 months or come out and snap some new ones. Then give us your best shot (or shots) for this year’s photo contest.

Feature Friday: Griffis Sculpture Park

Email Print PDF

Griffis_GooseOn my adventure to Griffis Sculpture Park, my anticipation grew every mile I got closer. I was lost in thought, mulling over the reviews I had heard from family and friends, suppressing my excitement to focus on the road. I was so lost in my thoughts that I actually passed the entrance to the park and had to turn around. Through the lush forest on both sides of Mill Valley Road pokes out a white sign indicating that I reached my destination: the Mill Valley Road site. Griffis Sculpture Park has another location at Rohr Hill Road, which is home to some of the larger, towering sculptures from local, national and international artists.
