Publish Your Story

Submission and Publishing Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in sharing your story or art with GrowWNY readers.  Stories and art submitted using this form may be published in the GrowWNY.org blog.

We welcome blog and art submissions and will publish stories that meet the following guidelines:

  1. Submissions should be in the neighborhood of 1,000 words or less; while we do make exceptions when warranted, it’s important to note that our most popular posts hover around 500 words;
  2. Please pay attention to formatting and proper grammar—if we have to spend a lot of time cleaning up your piece it won’t be posted;
  3. Avoid any hint of racist, sexist or religious bias, or any suggestion of nasty, snide, sarcastic, or condescending tone — “snark”;
  4. Obscenity and vulgarity are not, allowed and of course unverified assertions of fact, blind pejorative quotes, and other lapses in journalistic standards don’t ever belong in a Grow blog article;
  5. Don't advertise!  We encourage you to share information on how people can live greener, but we will not publish commercials for products or businesses; and
  6. If advocating for a particular issue or cause, please use the "Opinion" disclaimer by adding “Opinion/Commentary” after your story's name in the title box on the submission form.

The first article in our Earth Week series is on the topic of "WNY’s Great Outdoors – Preserving, Improving and Enjoying our Region".  Written by Mark Baldwin, Director of Education at Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, Mark higlights a few amazing outdoor locations that you should be sure to check out!  Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History is located in Jamestown, New York, and is a wonderful location to visit as well.


A common theme runs through every natural site in Western New York.  It's the main reason people came to live here to begin with.  It's the cornerstone of our current and future renewable energy portfolio.  It's beautiful and abundant yet never to be taken for granted because our very lives depend on it.

Celebrate the Advent of Spring at Boom Days!

boom_days_2012_1On Saturday, March 31, starting at 4 PM Buffalo will officially usher in spring with the 10th annual Boom Days.  This eclectic celebration of our unique culture as Western New Yorkers raises a toast to the removal of the ice boom and the passing of winter.  This year, we're upping the ante on what historically has been an outrageous party.

"Boom Days" is the region's grass roots celebration of the advent of spring, commencing each year with the lifting of the Lake Erie-Niagara River ice boom.  "Boom Days" commemorates the Niagara region's bustling waterways of days gone by, glorifies our natural, artistic and cultural wealth, and thanks to our strong winter.

Refuses Region Become New York's Science Experiment

Niagara_FallsOn March 5th, Niagara Falls went on record against fracking, and against treating wastewater from fracking.  Elected officials said they don't want the city that endured the Love Canal toxic waste crisis to be exposed to the fallout from gas drilling operations.  Former Love Canal activist Lois Gibb's expressed her approval for the City Council's decision in her online blog.  The City Council approved an ordinance prohibiting natural gas extraction in Niagara Falls, as well as the "storage, transfer, treatment or disposal of natural gas exploration and production wastes."

In Winter Survival Part II, the adventure continues as we follow our friends on their prolonged quest to survive this not-so-wintry winter.  When we last left our protagonists, they had split up to explore the different aspects of winter survival by experiencing them first-hand.  Matt was braving the elements and searching for unfortunate hibernators, Jason set out to discuss the matter from a geologic perspective and Steve was learning about survival strategies with Scott from Earth Spirit Educational Services.

BUFFALO, NY (March 13, 2012) – Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper, in partnership with the City of Buffalo and the citizen’s based “Friends of Broderick Park”, invite and encourage interested residents to attend an open public meeting, regarding the current master planning efforts for Broderick Park, on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, from 6:00PM to 8:00 PM, at the Belle Center, 104 Maryland Street, Buffalo, NY.

Broderick Park, located at the foot of West Ferry Street along the Niagara River, is a unique and publicly accessible waterfront asset that is ideal for anchoring and enhancing Frederick Law Olmsted’s vision of “a necklace of parks and open spaces along the length of the River, from Front Park in the City of Buffalo and stretching north of the Falls.” (Niagara River Greenway Plan and Final Environmental Impact Statement 2007)
