Get Involved – The Alliance for the Great Lakes
Summer is off to a great start in WNY! The Alliance for the Great Lakes, Starbucks and Barefoot Wine celebrated the summer solstice, on June 21st, by picking up trash and debris at Woodlawn Beach State Park. More than 50 volunteers removed several pounds of trash from the shoreline!
This is just a small snapshot of the Adopt-A-Beach program. All year long, across five lakes and eight states, volunteers collect litter and information on what they find at the shorelines. With marine debris, plastic pollution, and poor water quality as major issues facing Great Lakes ecosystems, Adopt-a-Beach offers citizens an opportunity to take an active role in understanding and finding solutions to these problems.
If you missed us in June, we will be at it again on July 19th at the Outer Harbor. Be sure to check out other public events that are happening in Western NY at greatlakesadopt.org, or you can plan your own! Being a team leader is an excellent way to act on your passion for the environment, get outside with your team or build new connections. If interested, join us at Resurgence Brewing on June 28th from 6:30-8:00 pm to find out how to get started and plan your own clean-up!
There is also an opportunity to participate in restoration efforts on July 13th at Beaver Island State Park, in partnership with the State Parks, to remove invasive species and plant some natives. Stay tuned for even more ways to get involved coming up in August!
