POSITION SUMMARY:

The Development Officer will work with Riverkeeper’s executive team and board of directors’ Advancement Committee to conceptualize, orchestrate and execute marketing and fundraising campaigns that contribute to consistent financial growth and visibility for Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper’s mission to protect water quality and connect people to their waterways. The Development Officer is responsible for the planning, implementation, and coordination of development activities with a primary focus on cultivating relationships and understanding donors’ and sponsors’ objectives and their capacity to give. Individual must be able to work collaboratively with a board of directors, Advancement Committee members, volunteer ambassadors and staff.

Responsibilities include supporting the development and implementation of a strategic fundraising plan to meet donor and organizational goals. The position demands timely and accurate tracking of donor relations efforts and outcomes. In close collaboration with marketing and communications staff, the Development Officer will assist in the conception and implementation of fundraising events, appeals, family, private and corporate foundation cultivation and solicitation, corporate sponsorship solicitations and fulfillment, and will contribute to the fiscal reporting associated with fundraising activities.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead strategies to identify, prioritize, cultivate, and solicit donors and prospects.
  • Cultivate relationships with individual and corporate donors, small and large local foundations.
  • Manage stewardship plan and its execution in all donor categories.
  • Manage donor relationships including strategic follow up and personalized engagement strategies.
  • Participate on the Board of Directors Advancement Committee, and assist in the coordination of all meetings, agendas, and working group efforts.
  • Manage grassroots fundraising efforts including direct mail (annual appeal), events, telemarketing social media, donor accountability and other e-fundraising campaigns.
  • Coordinate small, third-party fundraising and marketing events benefiting the organization.
  • Manage organizational donor database – create profiles and track donors, gifts, and prospects.
  • Work closely with team managers and all areas of the organization to effectively identify revenue producing and friend-raising opportunities that align with Riverkeeper’s interests and priorities, (i.e.: tours, rain barrel sales, tabling events, volunteer experiences, etc.)
  • Occasionally pursue and cultivate large national and international foundations.
  • Be a professional and active Riverkeeper advocate in the community.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s level degree, and preferred 2-4 years direct fundraising experience or equivalent transferable skills.
  • Strong relationship building skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience prospecting, cultivating, soliciting and securing gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations and in meeting annual fund goals.
  • Grant writing and event planning experience a plus.
  • PC proficiency- knowledge and expertise with contact management systems, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel; Raiser’s Edge experience preferred.
  • Passion for ecological issues with a primary focus on water quality and Great Lakes protection. Regular recreational interaction with water such as paddling, boating or fishing a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a cross functional team environment.
  • Positive attitude and ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work autonomously, is self-directed and proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Commitment to maintaining donor confidentiality.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a reliable automobile.

RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Internal: Maintain contact with the Executive Director, Team Directors, Advancement Committee, Board Members, and Ambassadors.
  • External: Maintain close contact with numerous donors, external community groups, partners, foundation program officers, collaborators, and others as required.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

The majority of the work time is conducted in an office or social setting. Local travel is required, e.g., donor visits. Some flexibility in schedule is required; occasional work in the evening and weekends, and some out of the area travel.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Demonstrate the ability to:

  • Maintain a high energy level; must be comfortable performing multi-faceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities.
  • Comfortable speaking in both small and large group settings.

COMPENSATION:
