Two New Citizen Engagement Programs

Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper Announces Two Citizen Engagement Programs:
Summer Shoreline Sweep and Fall River Academy Course  

Buffalo NY – Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper announces two citizen engagement opportunities: Summer Shoreline Sweep volunteer day and Fall River Academy course. Get involved in your community to make a difference with local environmental issues!

Riverkeeper’s Summer Shoreline Sweep will take place on Saturday September 19, 10AM-12PM at over 40 locations. Volunteers are needed to clean up litter along local waterways throughout Erie and Niagara counties. This volunteer program is family-friendly. Riverkeeper will provide all supplies, and volunteers will be thanked at a volunteer appreciation party following the event. Community service letters are available for students completing volunteering requirements. To see a full list of sites and sign up for the event, please visit bnriverkeeper.org/cleanup. The Summer Shoreline Sweep is supported in part by the Buffalo Sewer Authority and the HSBC Water Programme.

Fall River Academy begins on Saturday, September 12. This field-based Saturday morning training series provides a comprehensive introduction to our Niagara River watershed. The course covers current, local environmental problems and progressive solutions, including topics such as living infrastructure design, local water quality issues, and habitat restoration using native plants. Participants will experience field trips to project areas throughout the watershed, hands-on workshops and environmental service learning experiences. All participants will receive a certificate upon graduation.River Academy provides an exciting opportunity for professionals and citizens seeking to deepen their understanding of local watershed issues, students in need of hands-on field experience, and teachers seeking professional development. In addition, Riverkeeper is partnering with Erie Community College North Campus to offer college course credit for River Academy. Enrolled students should contact ECC to register.To sign up for the Fall River Academy certificate program (non course credit), visit bnriverkeeper.org/riveracademy. Riverkeeper tuition is $50 per class or $250 for the full semester (September 12 – December 19). Need-based, partial tuition scholarships are available.
