PRESS RELEASE: Beaver Meadow Birthday Bash!
Beaver Meadow Birthday Bash!
The Buffalo Audubon Society is immensely proud to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the dedication of the Fred T. Hall Nature Center at our Beaver Meadow Audubon Center in North Java, NY. To commemorate this auspicious occasion we will be holding a “Beaver Meadow Birthday Bash” on Sunday, June 14th from 2:00 PM to nightfall.
“The Nature Center at Beaver Meadow has hosted generations of children and families from across Western New York and around the globe” says Stuart Hempel, President of the Board of Buffalo Audubon. “We are thrilled to have achieved so much over the past 40 years as we have connected people with nature. We are pleased to host the Beaver Meadow Birthday Bash and to invite community members to visit the center and to celebrate this milestone anniversary.”
Although Buffalo Audubon first bought property in North Java in 1952, it wasn’t until the early 1970’s that the organization sought to bring increased numbers of school groups, families, and visitors to experience the habitats and wildlife found at this unique preserve. Between 1973 and 1975 the first phase of building resulted in a naturalist’s residence, an astronomical observatory, a seed house, and the two-story Nature Center, dedicated to the memory of Dr. Fred T. Hall, the director of the Buffalo Museum of Science. Since that time thousands of visitors have experienced nature first-hand at Beaver Meadow – so many that in the late 1990’s the center was expanded to its current 8,000 square foot layout.
When originally dedicated in 1975 the occasion was marked by two days of nature tours, a boutique, antiques and flower mart, and a country auction.
This year celebratory events will include our traditional 2:00 Sunday walk. Live birds of prey from Messinger Woods Wildlife Care and Education Center will be on display. Visitors will be able to take a horse-drawn wagon ride or canoe on our beaver pond. From 4:00-7:00 there will be a Krolick’s Chicken Barbecue to benefit the Pioneer Central School District Future Farmers of America Club.
In the evening Suzie Rozler and Mama Earth’s Kitchen Band will make music with a recycled instrument sing-along. Weather permitting there will be tethered hot air balloon rides over Beaver Meadow, providing visitors with a birds-eye view of the center. The night will wrap up with a campfire and S’mores!
