MAP Mobile Market 2017
MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE PROJECT TO BRING FRESH AFFORDABLE PRODUCE TO BUFFALO COMMUNITIES THIS SUMMER
BUFFALO, New York – In an effort to combat food inequity across Buffalo, Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP) will offer affordable and fresh vegetables and fruits to two urban sites for 2017. MAP’s Mobile Market is excited to continue serving communities in the Ellicott and Masten Districts this summer.
The MAP Mobile Market partners with local organizations to bring produce into areas of Buffalo where access to healthy, affordable, and fresh food is limited. Produce is grown at MAP’s urban farm on Massachusetts Avenue and at local partner farms, including Oles Family Farm in Alden, NY. This year’s community partners are Elim Christian Fellowship and Mulberry Street Block Club (at BFNC Moot Senior Center). MAP is excited to continue our partnership with these organizations and looks forward to expanding our reach with more community partners for the 2018 season.
MAP’s Mobile Market truck is easily identified by the brightly colored ‘veggie people’ adorning its sides. The Market is open to the public at individual sites on a weekly basis, for two to three hours at a time, from June until October, rain or shine.
The Mobile Market accepts cash, credit, SNAP (EBT), Double Up Food Bucks, and WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program checks and prices are affordable. Naturally grown or organic produce is sourced whenever possible. Recipes, storage, and cooking tips are provided at Mobile Market sites. In addition, MAP partners with Eat Smart New York to offer nutrition education and information to visitors.
In 2016, the Mobile Market served over 3,200 consumers and distributed 18,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to individuals, families, and seniors. Also in 2016, MAP participated in the Double Up Food Bucks program for a second year, and grew Double Up sales to over $1200. Double Up provides a $1 for $1 match, up to $20 per day, for SNAP recipients purchasing locally grown produce at participating Farmers’ Markets in WNY. Double Up funding is provided by The Field and Fork Network.
The large-scale construction project to build a new farmhouse on MAP’s Farm at 387 Massachusetts Avenue is currently underway, and will impact MAP’s growing capacity for the 2017 season. When the farmhouse is completed, it will house the farm, market, and youth programs, main offices and a commercial kitchen. In addition, there will be 3,000 square feet of cold storage space and dry storage space to further expand the Mobile Market’s reach by allowing produce to be held between markets.
Massachusetts Avenue Project is 501(c)3 not-for-profit with a mission to nurture the growth of a sustainable and equitable community food system to promote local economic opportunities, access to affordable, nutritious food and social change education.
