New York Campaign to Save the EPA
The New York Campaign to Save the EPA is a state-based network whose mission is to defend the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from the Trump administration and Congressional attacks.
The EPA plays a crucial role in protecting the health and safety of our nation’s families, communities, and environment. The EPA safeguards our most essential resources, including the water we drink, the air we breathe, the land we farm, and the climate we depend upon. It does so by enforcing environmental laws, holding polluters accountable, cleaning up hazardous waste sites, and implementing other science-based policies.
Unfortunately, the EPA is under assault by the Trump administration, which seeks to slash its budget, decimate its workforce, eliminate vital programs, and undermine its authority. As you are probably aware, the President has proposed to decimate the EPA is his FY2018 budget proposal. Among other things, his proposed budget:
- Cuts the EPA budget by 31%, putting it at its lowest level in 40 years (adjusted for inflation)
- Eliminates the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative
- Cuts EPA employees who oversee and put in place environmental regulations by 40%
- Cuts Superfund by about 25%
- Eliminates funding for climate change programs
The Campaign’s goals are to stop any cuts to the EPA’s budget and prevent any erosion of its ability to protect public health and the environment.
Membership in the Campaign is open to non-profit organizations, grassroots groups, faith institutions, unions, businesses, political clubs, student groups, civic associations, and other community-based organizations. There are no financial or other obligations associated with joining the Campaign. Organizations must only be committed to the Campaign’s mission and goals. The Campaign supports a variety of strategies and tactics, and members are welcome to be involved at any level.
